Key points
- Separate the announcement, its evidence and the publisher’s interpretation.
- Check dates, availability and baseline conditions before comparing claims.
Media-literacy guide. Product announcements are useful starting points, but they answer the vendor’s communication needs. A reader deciding whether to adopt a technology needs a different set of questions.
Separate three kinds of statement
First, record what was announced: the named product, release status and stated availability. Second, identify the evidence supplied, such as a reproducible test or a demonstration. Third, distinguish the publisher’s interpretation from the company’s claim. These categories should remain visible in a news article.
A launch video shows that a particular demonstration was produced. Without additional evidence, it does not establish how often the system succeeds, what the run cost or how many attempts were made.
Check the comparison
When a chart claims improvement, look for the baseline, test conditions and evaluation method. Ask whether the compared systems received similar resources and whether the test reflects your intended use. If these details are missing, the appropriate conclusion is that the comparison is incomplete.
A short reading checklist
- Open the original announcement rather than relying only on a repost.
- Check its publication date and any later correction.
- Distinguish preview access from general availability.
- Look for limitations alongside headline capabilities.
- Keep unverified numbers attributed to the organisation making the claim.
This is SearchAI’s proposed reading method, not a judgment about an unnamed vendor. Our editorial policy applies the same distinction to our own coverage. When evaluating a purchase, use representative tests rather than treating either a positive article or a critical article as a substitute for evidence.
